The gaming industry is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world. If statistics are anything to go by, the industry is expected to hit CA$122 billion by the end of this year. With technological advancements making things even better for both programmers and players, the sector has immense untapped opportunities. However, programming games is no mean feat, it calls for excellent problem-solving skills and an eye for details to meet audience expectations.

If your dream is to become a great game programmer, here are a few tips to get you started.

Define Your Purpose

No dream is hard to achieve as long as the purpose is there. You must decide what your goal is even before you think of developing your first game. Having the skills is good, but this is never enough. To define your purpose, you must invest a good amount of your time watching and playing games developed by some of your role models. As you do this, make sure to pick the lessons along the way.

Be Part of the Community

You cannot operate in a silo and expect to be great, look out for other like-minded people and be part of them. There are many forums, both offline and online, where programmers exchange ideas, make sure you are in such groups and utilize the moment to learn and hone your skills.

Develop a Vision Board

Game development calls for proper time management and planning. Without a plan, you are setting yourself up for failure. Be clear on what kinds of games you want to be known for and how you plan to go about every project. List down all your needs and ensure you have an idea of how the needs are going to be met. If it is a new skill you need to acquire to develop certain types of games, be clear on how you wan to go about that.
